About Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC)

Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) is an interactive web application dedicated to preserving and sharing memories of places connected to Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge history. The project is implemented by the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, in partnership with the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Civil Peace Service (CPS).

Through an interactive map, MMC identifies sites across Cambodia where historical events took place between 1975 and 1979. Each location is accompanied by multimedia content—video, audio, photographs, and text—telling stories from survivors, witnesses, and communities. By linking memories to specific places, MMC brings history to life and fosters reflection, learning, and intergenerational dialogue.

All content presented on the MMC platform is verified and curated by the Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, ensuring accuracy, ethical storytelling, and historical sensitivity.

Our Mission

Mapping Memories Cambodia seeks to:

  1. Preserve memories of the Khmer Rouge era through place-based storytelling.
  2. Engage young Cambodians and encourage dialogue about the past.
  3. Educate the public by offering accessible, multimedia narratives verified by experts.
  4. Connect generations—linking survivors’ experiences with the curiosity and empathy of today’s youth.

Why a Digital Platform?

In a country where one-third of the population was born after the Khmer Rouge regime, digital tools play a vital role in connecting young Cambodians to their collective past. MMC provides an accessible, visually engaging, and interactive space to explore history beyond textbooks—inviting users to experience memory where it happened and to reflect on its meaning today.

The platform also allows survivors and citizens to contribute their stories, ensuring that Cambodia’s collective memory continues to grow and evolve.
