From 1975 to 1979, Cambodia went through a genocidal regime under the Khmer Rouge, who were responsible for the death of millions of Cambodian people. According to the Documentation Center of Cambodia’s Mapping Program and Yale University, an estimated total number of deaths from Khmer Rouge actions, including mass killings, illness, and starvation, range from 1.7 to 2.5 million out of a population of 8 million people. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, formerly known as Security-2[M1] , served as the biggest interrogation and execution center in Cambodia during that time. Tuol Sleng has now become one of the primary exhibition centers displaying evidence of the brutal crimes. This evidence includes photographs of the victims, their clothes and shoes, as well as the beds and torture equipment used. One of the latest and least expected discoveries is hand-written scrawl on the wall. This feature story will discuss the stories behind the hidden scrawl, and what it means to the younger generation.
