When you install and register an account on MMC application, pressing “I Accept”, on your browsing, getting access to the Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) Service, this means you accept that you have already read, understood, and consented to follow the terms and conditions of using the MMC web and mobile application, Terms of Privacy of Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC), End User License Agreement, and further relevant terms, hereinafter called (the “Terms of Service” or “Agreement”). For those who do not agree to the Terms, you are not eligible to use or continue using the Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) Service.
Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) is a Khmer Rouge place-based storytelling web and mobile application. MMC is a non-profit project implemented by the Department of Media and Communication of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, with support from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Civil Peace Service (CPS). MMC identifies and locates places of significance of the KR era on a Cambodian map, and guides users to places where history happened. The journey to the points of interest is led by storytelling in audio, video, text, and pictures។ It aims to attract young Cambodians to learn about the KR history, and trigger a dialogue with their peers and family members. MMC also enable users/survivors to submit their stories and testimonies to the project team, allowing the ongoing collection of survivor’s testimonies and mapping places of remembrance throughout Cambodia. It shed lights on individual memory of everyday lives history of the Khmer Rouge Regime that seldom emerge in the common history narrative, creating space for public commemoration. MMC’s goal is to provide a platform that serves as the mechanism to open up the dialogue about Khmer Rouge History among the Cambodian youth and fosters cross-generational dialogue on Cambodia’s past violence, using personal story narratives in an interactive multimedia application. MMC has three platforms such as mobile application, web portal, and Facebook to achieve its missions that is listed down below:
To create an informative storytelling application that tells place-based stories of the Khmer Rouge Era.
To trigger the interests of young Cambodians in the Khmer Rouge History through recounting personal stories of survivors in relation to specific locations in Cambodia.
To widen the access to Khmer Rouge historical information among the Cambodian youth
MMC’s goal is to provide a platform that serves as the mechanism to open up the dialogue about Khmer Rouge History among the Cambodian youth and fosters cross-generational dialogue on Cambodia’s past violence, using personal story narratives in an interactive multimedia application.
A registration of an account is required in order to access to the Service. Some important information about you may be needed when you create an account. The required information may include but not limited to username, mobile number, password, an email address or other contact information such as home address, Facebook identity, Google identity, etc. Please, be sure that the provided information is true and up-to-date one. By providing us a password, you also consent to be exclusively responsible for keeping the confidentiality of your account and password and for all activities happening under your account. With trustable reasons proving that your account is unsecured caused by any loss, please, notify us immediately via firstname.lastname@example.org.
You must use our Services according to our Terms and posted policies. If we disable your account for a violation of our Terms, you will not create another account without our permission. You must access and use our Services only for legal, authorized, and acceptable purposes. You will not use (or assist others in using) our Services in ways that: (a) violate, misappropriate, or infringe the rights of Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC), our users, or others, including privacy, publicity, intellectual property, or other proprietary rights; (b) are illegal, obscene, defamatory, threatening, intimidating, harassing, hateful, racially, or ethnically offensive, or instigate or encourage conduct that would be illegal, or otherwise inappropriate, including promoting violent crimes; (c) involve publishing, commenting or calling falsehoods, misrepresentations, or misleading statements; (d) impersonate someone; or (e) involve any non-personal use of our Services unless otherwise authorized by us. Harm to Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) or Our Users. You must not (or assist others to) access, use, copy, adapt, modify, prepare derivative works based upon, distribute, license, sublicense, transfer, display, perform, or otherwise exploit our Services in impermissible or unauthorized manners, or in ways that burden, impair, or harm us, our Services, systems, our users, or others, including that you must not directly or through automated means: (a) reverse engineer, alter, modify, create derivative works from, decompile, or extract code from our Services; (b) send, store, or transmit viruses or other harmful computer code through or onto our Services; (c) gain or attempt to gain unauthorized access to our Services or systems; (d) interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of our Services; (e) create accounts for our Services through unauthorized or automated means; (f) collect the information of or about our users in any impermissible or unauthorized manner; (g) sell, resell, rent, or charge for our Services; or (h) distribute or make our Services available over a network where they could be used by multiple devices at the same time. You are responsible for keeping your device and your Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) account safe and secure and you must notify us promptly of any unauthorized use or security breach of your account or our Services.
The Department of Media and Communication (DMC) exclusively owns and operates Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) web and mobile app. The visual interfaces, graphics, design, compilation, information, computer code (Including source code or object code), products, software, services and all other elements of the Service provided by the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) are preserved by copyright, trade dress and trademark laws, international conventions, all other relevant intellectual property and proprietary rights, and applicable laws. Regardless any User Content provided and owned by users of the Service, all Materials contained in the Service are the property of the Department of Media and Communication (DMC) or its subsidiaries or associated companies and/or third-party licensors. All trademarks, service marks and trade names are proprietary to The Department of Media and Communication (DMC) or its associated and/or third-party licensors. Unless authorized by The Department of Media and Communication (DMC), you agree not to sell, license, distribute, copy, modify, publicly perform or display, transmit, publish, edit, adapt, create derivative works from or otherwise make unauthorized use of the Materials. The Department of Media and Communication (DMC) reserves all rights to the Materials not clearly stated as granted in the Terms.
We may use Google Analytics to collect and process certain users engagement when users clicking on our Mobile Application features, we will be able to know, for instance how many users are exploring the content.
You are required to let us know which operating system you are currently using on your phone. With information on operating system, we are able to know if your device support our product or not.
To understand the content in our Mobile Products, please select the language setting on your phone as English or Khmer. Our translation services may require Information about your language preferences.
Your IP address will be collected to determine which country your located in. We collected this IP addresses as it can help us to determine the demands and functionality of our Mobile Application to users and it helps to improve Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) mobile app to respond to users interests and preferences.
Since the data enable the DMC to increase relevancy and immediacy of the application in mobile, we collect data from Personal and/or Non Personal information as much as possible to get to know the overall audience of the Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) and this data will also be used to develop, evaluate, improve and deliver further content and Services to users.
Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) is an educational and not-for-profit platform that aims to widen the access to information about Khmer Rouge history to users, to make the Service more accessible and inclusive for users or Cambodians, we need data to help us identify which areas, provinces, or city are still not aware of our service, so we can reach out those audiences through implementation of outreach activities.
By knowing what type of content or places that users have most explored, we are able to identify new trends, thoughts, perspective and views of users on Khmer Rouge history. All these new findings will be important for further dialogue or discussion on how to engage or interact with young Cambodians or users on the subject of Khmer Rouge history.
We use, process and/or analyze the collected Personal and Non-Personal information about you to manage your account and we may use your contact information so as our project team will be able to communicate with you.
We also use other information for example users average age ranges from Cambodia population census to add to data we collect. The reason why we collect information from population census is not to personally know users identification or device but we tend to categorize groups of users by age ranges, type of occupation, gender, and education level.
When using our Mobile Product, your Non-Personal information are automatically and selectively collected by our web server, the selected information includes operating system you are running and your IP address, profile information, mobile device you use, the IP address of your mobile device. We use the data for diagnosing the Mobile Product problems, tracking usage and improving quality of our Mobile Application Services.
In order to login to access Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) Application, you will have few options to choose whether to login using your mobile phone number or to link to Facebook account. By authorizing Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) Mobile Application to access your Facebook account, you acknowledge that your Personal and/or Non Personal information on your Facebook profile.
When you register a profile, you may receive notifications via email, direct mail, telephone or other channels such as text messaging, Facebook and Instagram in relations to (the “Mobile Product”) and/or (the “Services”), on the other hand, you may choose not to receive any notifications by opt out.
You may be able to choose either to continue or end the data collection at any stage by just simply uninstalling Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) Mobile Application from your mobile devices.
We are committed to maintaining users’ confidentiality by not sharing, renting, or selling their collected information data to any other party.
We may use your Facebook data communicate with you. We make sure that your Facebook data is not shared by us to any irrelevant third party.
Users aware of the fact that when you click any of the advertisers on a Mobile Application, your device may also be tracked by advertisers of those social media sites or services. To this context we are not responsible for any leak of your information caused by any irrelevant third party.
Nevertheless, in terms of physical and electronic security system, we do not tend to warrant our server or database security and we do not guarantee if your information is not blocked during the process of Internet transmission.

When you agree with Mapping Memories Cambodia (MMC) Terms of Service, you give your consent that you will be personally responsible for your use of the Service and you agree to protect, guarantee and secure The Department of Media and Communication of the Royal University of Phnom Penh and its officers, directors, employees, consultants, affiliates, subsidiaries, donors and agents (Collectively, the “DMC Entities”) from and against any and all claims, liabilities, damages, losses and expenses including reasonable attorneys’ and accounting fees and costs, arising out of or in any way connected with your access to, use of or alleged use of the Service; your violation of the Terms or any representation, warranty, or agreements referenced herein, or any applicable law or regulation; your violation of any third-party right including without any limitation intellectual property right, publicity, confidentiality, property or privacy right; or any disputes or issues between you and any third party.
At our own expense, we reserve the right to assume the exclusive protection and control of any matter otherwise subject to security by you, and in such case, you agree to cooperate with our prevention of such claim.
